COURSE EXAMPLE:

Higher Education Learning Contexts: Cultural Ways of Knowing

Purpose

Higher Education has been continuously evolving and borrowing understanding and knowledge from multiple perspectives. However, with this constant borrowing and reshaping of education, the places and contexts from which the borrowing occurred are not always communicated or set within a solid context. Often higher education claims new concepts and ideas that may have historical and cultural origins. In turn, these cultural ways of knowing become attributed to groundbreaking dynamic teaching and learning techniques without adequate acknowledgment.

We will use this idea as a frame for this course and discuss ways that cultural ways of knowing have appeared in higher education. We will reflect on the ways that we can support centering the cultural perspectives that these ideas connect to as well as learn how we can support multiple communities in our learning together. In this course, we will also discuss a new wave in educational learning, contemplative practice that has recently becoming welcomed into higher education at a steady rate. Contemplative practice (sometimes called contemplative pedagogy) can be drawn back to multiple cultural spaces and communities. We will use contemplative practice as an example of how cultural ways of knowing has been reimagined in higher education and discuss the positive and negatives of this idea.

Outcomes

In this course students will:

1.    Reflect on the ways they have come to their own learning and understanding in higher education.

2.    Critically engage in conversation and critique about higher education learning contexts.

3.    Process ways to be change agents in higher education.

4.    Expand current knowledge of higher education learning contexts.

5.    Articulate understanding and reflection on the issues and topics discussed in this course.
